Westcountry Savings and Loans launch a new smartphone app

29 Mar 19

A new online banking app, a new credit union sustainability partnership and positive member survey are amongst the highlights reported at Westcountry Savings and Loans’ (WCSL) AGM.

Launching this month, WCSL’s new smartphone app gives members access to arrange payments 24/7. Chair of WCSL, Gill Hull describes the implementation of the new app as part of a “strategy to be a modern, accessible credit union”.

In September 2018, WCSL won a competitive selection exercise which awarded them a ‘Credit Union Sustainability Partnership’ (CUSP) with nine Housing Associations across the South West. In order to accommodate one of the housing providers, WCSL made a successful application to extend its common bond.  The extension has increased the credit union’s services geographically and the new online banking app will provide a valuable service for those members who find it difficult to reach the credit union’s branches in person.

General Manager at WCSL, Jackie Simpson hopes the new banking facility will encourage more people to join the credit union and not be tempted by loan sharks or high-cost lenders. Jackie said: "Across the country, millions of pounds are spent unnecessarily each year by people taking out high-cost credit. We don't want our members amongst them. Much of that extra cost could be avoided by joining us, leaving more money in your pocket to spend on the nice things in life.”

Members of WCSL stated their clear satisfaction with the service they're receiving from the credit union in a recent survey conducted by WCSL. Results show that 100% of membership would recommend the credit union to a friend or family member.

Marketing Coordinator at WCSL, Sally Dyer was overwhelmed how positive the results were, Sally said: “I worked in financial services for 12 years before joining WCSL and haven’t seen customer response rates this high for a non-incentivised survey.”

Speaking to WCSL members at their AGM, Gill Hull thanked staff and volunteers for their work and commitment during 2018 and is confident that, "we’re in a position to keep providing high-quality products and services for our members in the years to come."
