Year-end figures reflected the continued growth that Dragonsavers has once again achieved over the year, enabling the credit union to continue to operate as a sustainable, self-sufficient organisation.

During 2017-2018, all measures have shown a significant increase including membership, savings and loan values and income from loan interest. Almost 2000 loans were made to members with a value in excess of £1.6m, adult membership increased by 6% which leaves total membership at 5173 with a total savings of over £3.2m.

Chief Executive of Dragonsavers, Christina Stoneman is confident the credit union will continue to grow, due to the positive word of mouth testimony by members. Christina said: “We’re delighted to see a continued increase in overall membership. It’s very rewarding to know that members spread the message of the credit union.

“Dragonsavers staff past and present provide a tremendous service for our members and this year it was acknowledged at two different award ceremonies”.

In November, having served the Welsh Credit Union sector for over 20 years, President of Dragonsavers Credit Union, Ian Gylee was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by Credit Unions of Wales. Ian was presented his award by the Patron of Credit Unions of Wales, Jane Hutt AM and BBC broadcaster, Jennifer Jones at the event in Cardiff.

Speaking after receiving the award, Ian said: “I am absolutely overwhelmed to receive this award which I accepted on behalf of our staff, members and volunteers at Dragonsavers Credit Union. They work incredibly hard to ensure the ongoing success of the credit union movement and the many financial services we have available to the public”.

Ian also received the Edward Filene Awards for Performance Excellence ‘Single Benefactor’ award which recognised his work in demonstrating how credit unions can be a viable alternative to high street banks in Great Britain and Ireland.
