Cardiff & Vale Credit Union (CVCU) has shared with its members a tremendous year in terms of impact in the community in their annual newsletter.
The credit union highlighted the fact that membership now stands just below 10,000 with assets of £6.5m. In the lead up to Christmas it granted 340 Christmas loans worth £248,000, proving they are an ethical alternative to high-cost loans in the community.
Chief Executive of CVCU, Leanne Herberg described 2018 as “a very busy and successful year for us, as we expanded our services to more members and created new partnerships with employers and schools”.
In March the credit union hosted a financial wellbeing at work event for local employers, in partnership with their new payroll partners Capital Law which resulted in several new employer partners joining throughout 2018. CVCU now offers safe savings and loans through a staff payroll scheme to 41 employers. They also prove school savers’ clubs to 20 schools across Cardiff and Vale of Glamorgan. .
A few months later and CVCU were delighted to be shortlisted as finalists for the Social Enterprise of Year award in the Social Business Wales Awards 2018 for their valued awareness contributions to financial wellbeing in the workplace, and supporting local school saving clubs.
Leanne added: “We were delighted to be finalists in the national awards, which reflects the social and economic value of our contributions to the communities we serve as a fair finance provider, and the efforts of our hard-working staff, directors and volunteers."
Another notable highlight for the credit union was its involvement in the Credit Unions of Wales awards. Longstanding member and now Board Director for CVCU, Suzie Chetri was presented with the ‘Member Making a Difference’ award.
Suzie’s story was picked up and featured on ITV News, and Leanne was interviewed at ITV studios to promote Credit Unions in Wales. Speaking about the awards and acknowledging the great work across the Welsh credit union sector, Leanne said: “The awards ceremony on International Credit Union Day was a great opportunity for us to showcase the great work of credit unions across Wales, as well as our partners and supporters.”
