St Albans Mayor praises the work of St Albans District Credit Union

11 Jan 19

Speaking at St Albans District Credit Union’s annual Christmas event to thank volunteers for their continued valued service in the community, Mayor Rosemary Farmer applauded volunteers for “helping people who can often be excluded from the mainstream”.

Last year St Albans District Council provided funding so people can access affordable loans for deposits and their first month’s rent. The funding was also used to help provide ‘jam jar’ savings accounts for Council tenants to set aside money to continue meeting their housing costs.

Cllr Brian Ellis, Portfolio Holder for Housing and Inclusion, for St AlbansCity and District Council said, “Demand for council housing is high and there is limited availability, so we are referring some people who are seeking housing assistance to the private rented sector. To make it easier for people to find privately rented homes, we are encouraging landlords to make their properties available through a new scheme. We are also providing funding to the credit union so people can access affordable loans for deposits and their first month’s rent.”

The local Mayor commended particularly the housing scheme the credit union runs in conjunction with the Council citing: “it is really important because it does mean that people who would otherwise not be able to find a home are able to do so. I know that it has been a significant number you have been able to help and this has increased in 2018”.

Looking forward to 2019, she noted the challenge that the credit union faces in attracting loan applications from the wider community, not just those with limited finances, in order that the credit union can continue to be strong enough to help those in need.

Speaking about his delight for the Mayor to attend their annual Christmas event, Chairman of St Albans District Credit Union, Colin Metcalfe said: “It was great to have the Mayor attend to say thank you to our volunteers. It is very encouraging for not only ourselves, but the entire community that our Mayor is enthusiastic about the services we provide to members and we look forward to continuing the work put into what has been a successful year for St Albans District Credit Union”.
